Arizona Woman Invents Carjacking Story to Avoid DUI Arrest

|
In Arizona, a police chase ended after an 18 year old woman named April Newman tried to drive over an embankment, only to become stuck.  A deputy for the Yavapai County Sheriff's department reported that he almost had a head on collision with the driver when she swerved into his lane, but was lucky enough to avoid a crash.   After nearly being struck by the driver's vehicle, the deputy chased the woman, who he believed was drunk driving.

When the chase finally ended, Newman and another young woman who was sitting in the passenger seat fled into a nearby ravine.  More deputies arrived at the scene and were able to catch both women who claimed that they had been carjacked by a Hispanic man who had fled from them after their car became stuck in the embankment.

However, the deputies noticed that Newman had the odor of alcohol on her breath and also noticed that there were several open alcoholic beverages in Newman's car.

After police questioned the girls, the passenger revealed that the carjacking story was made up, and that they had hoped the story would help Newman avoid a DUI arrest.  Arizona deputies charged Newman with extreme DUI, DUI underage of 21, felony flight and underage alcohol consumption.
