In the city of Wilmington, Delaware, 17 people are facing charges for driving under the influence (DUI).  The people were arrested for DUI during a St. Patrick's Day crackdown that started this past weekend.

On Saturday night, both the state Office of Highway Safety and the New Castle County DUI Task Force joined efforts to conduct a DUI checkpoint in Wilmington.  The checkpoint was created to catch drunk drivers over the holiday weekend and on St. Patrick's Day, which falls on March 17th.

According to national DUI statistics, 50 people died on St. Patrick's Day in 2008 due to driving under the influence after holiday celebrations.  Therefore, the need for extra police patrolling is necessary in large cities, like Wilmington.

Police in Delaware report that they cited 1 person for underage drinking, made 4 drug arrests, 5 felony arrests, arrested 4 people with warrants and issued 45 citations for traffic related offenses.  They also managed to recover a stolen vehicle.  In 2009, the police department arrested 52 people during the St. Patrick's Day checkpoint.

This past Saturday night, coordinated patrols throughout Contra Costa County were able to issue 23 driving under the influence (DUI) citations.  During the holiday season, police departments throughout the state of California have increased DUI checkpoints in an attempt to reduce DUI fatalities and car accidents.

Law enforcement agencies are reporting that troops in Antioch, Pittsburg, Brentwood and Contra Costa stopped approximately 97 cars on Sunday between the hours of 8 PM and 2 AM.  Police used roving two person patrols through the duration of the evening into the early morning hours.

Police also report that they conducted 13 field sobriety tests (FST) during their operation.  So far, they believe that increased checkpoints and continued their continued vigilance has led to a decrease in incidents of drunk driving and DUI accidents throughout the holiday season.

California police departments hope to raise awareness of the dangers associated with driving under the influence and they say that numerous police agencies are running similar patrols with the same mission.
