West Virginia Man Tells Police He Drank 13 Beers

|
Last night, a man in Charleston, West Virginia was stopped by local law enforcement for suspicion of drunk driving.  When the man was pulled over by police, he told them that he had been drinking all night while attending a Christmas party.   The man was stopped by Kanawha County Deputy J.M. Vernon who had spotted him weaving in and out of his traffic lane.

According to Vernon, the man, 38 year old Frederick D. Dunlap, was driving his pick-up erratically and continued to drift over the centerline of the road before swerving back into his own traffic lane.  Vernon also reported that Dunlap ran his truck off of the road several times.

Vernon immediately decided to stop Dunlap.  Once he approached Dunlap's truck, Vernon claimed that he smelled alcohol on Dunlap's breath and that Dunlap's speech was slurred.
Dunlap told the deputy that he had drank 12 - 13 beers while attending a nearby Christmas party.  He said he knew he should not have been driving and that he had purposefully taken back roads in order to avoid police patrol cars.

Dunlap had a hard time keeping his balance and stumbled all over the place when he was asked to step outside of his pick-up.  He was asked to perform 3 field sobriety tests, all of which he failed.  He was then taken to the Kanawha County Sheriff's police department and asked to perform a breath test.  His breath test revealed that his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was 0.170%, which is over twice the West Virginia legal limit.

Dunlap was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) and is awaiting further legal proceedings.

Police Arrest 23 at DUI Checkpoints in San Jose

This past Saturday night, coordinated patrols throughout Contra Costa County were able to issue 23 driving under the influence (DUI) citations.  During the holiday season, police departments throughout the state of California have increased DUI checkpoints in an attempt to reduce DUI fatalities and car accidents.

Law enforcement agencies are reporting that troops in Antioch, Pittsburg, Brentwood and Contra Costa stopped approximately 97 cars on Sunday between the hours of 8 PM and 2 AM.  Police used roving two person patrols through the duration of the evening into the early morning hours.

Police also report that they conducted 13 field sobriety tests (FST) during their operation.  So far, they believe that increased checkpoints and continued their continued vigilance has led to a decrease in incidents of drunk driving and DUI accidents throughout the holiday season.

California police departments hope to raise awareness of the dangers associated with driving under the influence and they say that numerous police agencies are running similar patrols with the same mission.

Riverside County Prepared to Crack Down on Holiday Drunk Driving

|

As of today, Riverside County Law Enforcement agencies will be joining other law enforcement departments throughout California on the Holiday DUI crackdown called the "Avoid the 30".

In accordance with California's Holiday DUI Enforcement Campaign, authorities will have zero tolerance for drivers who are driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.  Additionally, law enforcement departments statewide are asking other motorists to call 911 if they suspect that a person is drunk driving.

''How many times have you seen someone driving erratically in an unsafe manner and wished there was a cop around?'' said Karen Haverkamp with the Riverside Police Department, "law enforcement can't be everywhere at once."  Police are asking that motorists call 911 if they see fellow drivers weaving on the road or exhibiting other indicative signs of drunk driving like speeding, ignoring traffic signs or random stops.

"Avoid the 30" alludes to the process of DUI offenders being handcuffed.  The "0" represents a closed handcuff and the "3" represents an open handcuff that is about to be closed.

Police say that help from the public is greatly appreciated and also needed throughout these types of campaigns.

Checkpoints and saturation patrols will be held across the county to stop drunk drivers.  The checkpoints are created by the city as a way to reduce the number of people killed and/or injured during DUI related accidents throughout the holidays.

At the checkpoints, motor vehicles are checked and drivers who are under the influence are immediately arrested.

''Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol or drugs,'' said Riverside County sheriff, Randall Wedertz.
