Dodgers Pitcher Belisario Arrested on DUI Charges

|

Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Ronald Belisario was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of DUI.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Belisario was pulled over near his Pasadena apartment around 2:30 a.m. by the California Highway Patrol. He was allegedly talking on a cell phone, and police observed "symptoms of possible alcohol intoxication."

In California, talking on a cell phone while driving is considered a traffic offense.

Belisario was arrested and taken to the Pasadena Police Department, where he was later released on bail.

Belisario, who arrived at Dodger Stadium and suited up to play for Saturday night's game, had no comment on the matter.  He eventually did make a statement, speaking in Spanish "I was driving to my apartment, talking on the telephone and they stopped me. Then they gave me the alcohol test and it was normal. They gave me a paper, said everything was normal...Everything is fine."

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti expressed his disappointment, as did manager Joe Torre.

Cheryl Ranae Reynolds, 48, was allegedly reaching for a bottle of alcohol that fell on the floor when she lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a viaduct.  Her daughter, who was riding in the passenger seat, was thrown forward in the crash, causing her head to smash through the windshield.

A Chicago cop has been arrested on DUI and other criminal charges after he allegedly hit a 13-year-old boy and fled the scene of the accident.

According to police, Richard Bolling, who spent 17 years on the police force, was drinking at a bar before he got into his vehicle to drive home.  While driving at excessive speeds, Bolling hit and killed the boy before he drove away from the scene.

According to police there was an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. A new West Virginia DUI bill has been proposed that calls for stricter penalties for repeat DUI offenders.

The Evans-Perry Bill, named after two families involved in a deadly DUI crash in 2007, would not only call for tougher penalties for repeat offenders, but it would also prevent multiple DUI offenders from obtaining driver's licenses in other states.

The bill calls for staggered sentencing for repeat DUI offenders, jail or prison for a first-time sentence, and probation and alcohol treatment for the second.

Five members of the Evans and Perry families were killed and several others were injured in an accident caused by Brian Stone, who was driving on a revoked license and had multiple DUI convictions on his record.  Stone is currently serving time in prison for the accident.

According to the Associated Press, the Penn State student who normally takes the field as the university's Nittany Lion mascot has been suspended from all team activities after being charged with DUI.

James Sheep was pulled over on the university campus around 3:15 a.m. on Nov. 22, just hours before Penn State took the football field against Michigan State. He was later charged with DUI. As a result of the DUI charges, Sheep will miss Penn State's upcoming game at the Rose Bowl.

Penn State cheerleading coach Curt White said Sheep has been suspended from all school events, and will not attend the Rose Bowl or participate in Rose Bowl events. Sheep's suspension will end in 2009 when he will be free to resume his duties as team mascot.

Another member of the school cheerleading squad will perform as the mascot for the remainder of Sheep's suspension.
