Arizona Receives Grants to Crack Down on Drunk Driving

|

In Arizona, two local law enforcement agencies recently received grants from the state so that they could continue their efforts to crack down on drunk driving.  The two agencies, Pima County Sheriff's Department and Nogales Police Department, were given grants from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

Pima County was given approximately $181,000 and Nogales received just below $69,000. Both departments will use the money to conduct DUI enforcement checkpoints throughout the year.  They will also use the money to locate people who have outstanding DUI warrants and to conduct liquor license inspections.

Pima is expected to use $12,225 to purchase 25 new breath-testing machines, which the department will use to conduct underage drinking investigations.

Nogales told news sources that it will use grant money to purchase DUI equipment and also to pay for overtime staff during DUI crackdowns.

East Valley Beefs Up DUI Patrols Over the Next Few Weeks

|

An article from Azcentral.com warns drivers that the Chandler Police Department, along with other agencies, plans to beef up DUI patrols over the next few weeks in the East Valley area.  Every night, 125 officers will roam the streets looking for people driving under the influence.

With help from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and the Gila River and Salt River police departments, the patrols will occur in different areas of the East Valley each night.

Upping the amount of police patrols may be in response to the number of people killed in alcohol-related crashes last year. According to the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, of the 849 people killed in auto accidents in Arizona last year, 34 percent of those people were killed in accidents in which alcohol levels were above the legal limit. This number was in spite of the fact that last year's DUI task force arrested 1,629 people over the same 15 day period.  Of that those arrests, 414 were extreme DUIs, 120 were aggravated DUIs, and 260 were drug-related DUI cases.

Law enforcement officials hope that this year people will be smart enough not to drink and drive, but if they do, they will be out there to catch them and place them under arrest.

Driver Arrested for DUI after Driving 100 MPH

|

In Prescott, Arizona, a female driver by the name of Linda Majenty was arrested for driving under the influence on Highway 260 this weekend.  According to reports, 25 year old Majenty was driving 100 miles per hour before she was stopped for suspicion of DUI.  The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office reports that Majenty is facing aggravated DUI charges and seven counts of endangerment for her behavior.

At this time, police say that Majenty is facing charges of extreme DUI, driving on a suspended license, criminal speeding and having an open container in a motor vehicle.

When deputies pulled Majenty over, they administered a breath alcohol test.  Her result was .235 percent, which is almost three times Arizona's legal limit.  They report that Majenty had passed several vehicles while speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road in a no passing zone.

Police were only able to stop Majenty after she nearly crashed into a parked vehicle near Camp Verde Jail.  Once police approached her vehicle, they noticed that the car had a strong odor of alcohol.  Alcohol could also be smelled on her breath.  Majenty was asked to step out of her vehicle, but she could barely stand without assistance from police.

This is not the first time Majenty faced DUI charges.  In 2007, she was charged with aggravated DUI.

Arizona Woman Invents Carjacking Story to Avoid DUI Arrest

|
In Arizona, a police chase ended after an 18 year old woman named April Newman tried to drive over an embankment, only to become stuck.  A deputy for the Yavapai County Sheriff's department reported that he almost had a head on collision with the driver when she swerved into his lane, but was lucky enough to avoid a crash.   After nearly being struck by the driver's vehicle, the deputy chased the woman, who he believed was drunk driving.

When the chase finally ended, Newman and another young woman who was sitting in the passenger seat fled into a nearby ravine.  More deputies arrived at the scene and were able to catch both women who claimed that they had been carjacked by a Hispanic man who had fled from them after their car became stuck in the embankment.

However, the deputies noticed that Newman had the odor of alcohol on her breath and also noticed that there were several open alcoholic beverages in Newman's car.

After police questioned the girls, the passenger revealed that the carjacking story was made up, and that they had hoped the story would help Newman avoid a DUI arrest.  Arizona deputies charged Newman with extreme DUI, DUI underage of 21, felony flight and underage alcohol consumption.
