Driving Under the Influence of Drugs: An Overview

|

It is a crime in all 50 states to drive under the influence of an illegal drug, narcotic, or controlled substance.  While many people are aware of this law, most people are surprised to learn they can also be arrested on DUI of drug charges for driving under the influence of a prescription drug.

Any time a driver consumes a prescription drug or over-the-counter medication that affects his or her ability to safely drive a vehicle, he or she can be arrested on DUI charges.  Just like illegal drugs, prescription and over-the-counter medications have the ability to impair a driver's level of alertness and reaction time.  Even something as seemingly harmless as Nyquil can cause a driver to become drowsy, ultimately increasing his or her chances of causing a serious or fatal accident.
