John Raynor, a 44-year-old man from Montville, New Jersey, was arrested last Thursday after allegedly crashing his 2008 Honda Accord into the playground of Valley View School. Fortunately, no children were present at the time of the crash.

The officers who responded say that Raynor acted violently, punching and kicking his vehicle, and that Raynor resisted arrest, threatened to kill the responding officers, and spit on one of them. Further investigation later found that Raynor was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the incident.

After subduing Raynor, police transported him to St. Clare's Hospital in Denville, and later to Morris County Jail. Raynor remains in jail in lieu of $25,000 bail on charges of threats to kill, aggravated assault, driving while under the influence in a school zone, resisting arrest, reckless driving, and driving without insurance.

Georgia Officer Arrested on DUI Charge

In the wee hours of last Saturday morning, Officer Lindsay Perry was pulled over while driving down Highway 13 in Hall County, Georgia. The State Patrol trooper who pulled Perry over said the officer's breath had the scent of alcohol, causing the trooper to take Perry into custody. Perry has been charged with driving while under the influence.

As a result of this charge, Perry has been removed from active duty and reassigned to administrative duties pending the result of an internal investigation as well as the outcome of Perry's criminal proceedings, Officer Brian Kelly of the Gwinnett County Police Department reported.

This is not the first internal police investigation that Perry has faced. In July of 2009, Perry responded to a suicide call that resulted in Perry shooting and killing two women. An internal investigation into the shooting was initiated, and Perry was eventually cleared of any wrong doing.

Ohio Man Driving Damaged Car Charged with DUI

In Cleveland, Ohio, 46 year old George Gilbert Sr. has been accused of drunk driving, having an unsafe vehicle and violating the speed limit. 

Prior to having criminal charges filed against him, Gilbert had been driving a disabled car when a police car crashed into him.  At the time of the accident, police discovered that Gilbert's blood alcohol concentration was .149.

Gilbert has a long list of traffic citations in Cleveland.  However, he had never been charged with driving under the influence before. 

On November 22nd, Patrolman John Cotner was driving 73 MPH in a 60 MPH zone.  He was accused of driving too closely to Gilbert, which supposedly led to the collision near Ohio 176.

According to other reports, Gilbert had run out of gas so he was pushing his vehicle to the side of the highway when Cotner hit him.  The forceful impact threw Gilbert out of his shoes and he landed in the direct path of his rolling car, which ran over his leg.  Later, he had to have his lower right leg amputated.

Man Found Guilty of DUI Manslaughter in Santa Rosa County

This past Tuesday, 28 year old Joseph Ronald Stewart was found guilty of DUI manslaughter by a Santa Rosa County jury.  He was also convicted of two counts of DUI with serious bodily injury.

Stewart is from Navarre and according to witnesses he was fleeing a crash that occurred on Highway 98.  While fleeing the scene of the accident, he crashed into Bartholomew Cole, a Gulf Breeze resident.  Bartholomew was killed upon impact and his wife, Jennifer, and Joel E. Rodriguez were both injured.

Gerald Ward, a Life Guard Paramedic Supervisor, pronounced Cole's death at 3:22 AM.  FHP reports indicate that Stewart had been driving east bound when he approached the Mossy Oaks Drive Intersection, applied the brakes and veered left to avoid collision with Cole.  

At the time of the crash, Cole was trying to complete a left turn in his 1996 Chevy when Stewart hit his vehicle.

Oakland Teen Driver Had Prior DUI

In Oakland, California, law enforcement reports that a teenage driver who was recently arrested for driving under the influence had a prior DUI.  The driver, who is 17 years of age, was armed when he crashed his vehicle into an apartment building.  His passenger, who was 22 years of age, died upon impact.


Police say that the 17 year old was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence of intoxicants and also gun charges as a result of the recent accident, which took place this past weekend.


Due to the fact that the DUI offender is a minor, police will not reveal his name.  However, they have reported that this is not his first DUI offense.


Prior to the accident, California Highway Patrol officers tried to pull over the 17 year old, who was speeding.  However, the chase ended abruptly when the teenager drove into an Oakland apartment building.

14 Arrested at Huntington Beach DUI Checkpoint

On April 17th, the Hunting Beach police department conducted a DUI (driving under the influence) checkpoint.  The checkpoint was stationed on Pacific Coast Highway and Huntington Street.


According to reports, police screened 420 vehicles that drove through the checkpoint and arrested 14 people for driving under the influence and other criminal offenses.  In total, 1,300 vehicles passed through.


11 drivers were asked to perform field sobriety tests, which are meant to check coordination and agility.  The drivers failed, leading to 11 arrests for driving under the influence, along with three arrests for other crimes.


Police started the checkpoint at 9:30 PM and continued until 2:30 AM.  While people drove through, officers handed out educational drinking pamphlets to over 400 individuals.

Tennessee Man Driving Lawn Mower Arrested for DUI

In Athens, Tennessee, police report that a 30 year old man by the name of Jimmy Graham Jr. was stopped while driving a lawn mower down the road.  When police stopped him, they noticed that he smelled of alcohol and asked him to perform field sobriety tests, which he failed.

Police then charged him with driving under the influence (DUI).  Graham told the arresting officers that he had drank beer and also had taken a prescribed stress reliever.

On Tuesday, Graham remained in police custody and was without a lawyer.  He was also charged with aggravated burglary and theft under $500.

In Graham's police report, officers say that he told them he has stopped by a house to pick up some fishing equipment, including fishing poles.  However, the man that resides at the house reported that the equipment was stolen from his property.

Woman Pleads Guilty to 32 Counts of DUI

In Illinois, a woman by the name of Melissa Weiser recently pled guilty to 32 counts of driving under the influence (DUI).  Weiser is 28 years old and was sentenced to a prison term of 20 years by a Clinton County Court judge.

According to police, Weiser was drunk driving when she ran a stop sign and struck a SUV last may in north Clinton County.  The DUI accident led to the death of four people as well as the injuries of five individuals.  One of the individuals that was killed during the accident was Weiser's former fiancĂ©, Chaz Sergeant.  He was 21 years old at the time of his death.

When police arrived at the scene of the accident, they asked Weiser to perform a breath test.  The test revealed that her breath alcohol concentration was well over the legal limit. 

John Hudspeth, Clinton County States Attorney, said that he wanted the 20 year prison sentence because Weiser had three prior driving on a suspended license convictions and five prior no insurance convictions.  Other than those offenses, Weiser had no criminal history. 

At this time, Weiser remains in police custody and expected to start serving her sentence immediately.

Man Charged with DUI and Murder in Kentucky

Lexington, Kentucky - In Christian County, a man was recently charged with both murder and driving under the influence.  The man, Edelbert Eastway, was charged with the criminal offenses after he caused a hit and run accident that led to the death of a local woman.

Police say that the DUI accident took place last Friday on Interstate 24 in Oak Grove.  That night, four women were riding inside a car that was struck by a pickup truck.  After being hit, the car began to roll with the women trapped inside.  Eventually, all four women were taken from the vehicle and driven to a hospital in Tennessee for treatment. 

At this time, reports indicate that one woman died, one woman was admitted into the hospital and is still receiving treatment and the two other women were released after being examined.

Eastway is currently being held in the Christian County Detention Center and waiting for his time in court.

One Killed and One Arrested in Lexington

In Lexington, Kentucky, one person was killed during an accident in Henry County on Sunday evening. 

According to reports, a man by the name of Esteban Valasquez was driving under the influence when he caused a DUI accident.  Later, he was arrested by police for DUI and manslaughter.

Police report that Valasquez had been driving south on I-71 near exit 34 at 11 PM when he suddenly lost control of his car.  His vehicle than spun off the road and drove into a support beam for a bridge.  Valasquez's passenger was thrown from the car and instantly killed.
Instead of waiting for police, Valasquez tried to get away.  However, he was found later and charged with DUI and vehicular manslaughter. 

At this time, the name of the victim has not been made public.

Chicago Bus Driver Accused of DUI

In Chicago, Illinois, a bus driver transporting dozens of elementary school students was accused of driving under the influence (DUI) and having a high blood alcohol concentration.

According to the Cook County state's attorney's office, the bus driver, 54 year old Betty Burden, admitted that she had several vodka drinks before driving students to Lions Park Elementary School.  Burden is a resident of Mount Prospect and state officials say that she has been a school bus driver since 1991.

Prosecutors working on the case say that Burden's blood alcohol level was 0.226%.  In the state of Illinois, the legal limit is 0.08% and 0.04% for drivers with commercial licenses. 
At this time, Burden is refusing to comment on her case and criminal charges.

In the city of Wilmington, Delaware, 17 people are facing charges for driving under the influence (DUI).  The people were arrested for DUI during a St. Patrick's Day crackdown that started this past weekend.

On Saturday night, both the state Office of Highway Safety and the New Castle County DUI Task Force joined efforts to conduct a DUI checkpoint in Wilmington.  The checkpoint was created to catch drunk drivers over the holiday weekend and on St. Patrick's Day, which falls on March 17th.

According to national DUI statistics, 50 people died on St. Patrick's Day in 2008 due to driving under the influence after holiday celebrations.  Therefore, the need for extra police patrolling is necessary in large cities, like Wilmington.

Police in Delaware report that they cited 1 person for underage drinking, made 4 drug arrests, 5 felony arrests, arrested 4 people with warrants and issued 45 citations for traffic related offenses.  They also managed to recover a stolen vehicle.  In 2009, the police department arrested 52 people during the St. Patrick's Day checkpoint.

Driver Arrested for Hit and Run in Pennsylvania

In West Chester, Pennsylvania, a 49 year old by the name of Patrick Cassinelli was recently arrested for hit and run.  According to news reports, Cassinelli is a prior DUI offender and had 5 drunk driving convictions prior to his most recent accident.

Cassinelli allegedly hit a 55 year old named Kholboy Kurbonov, a Russian native.  The victim was identified at the hospital after medical professionals found his passport on his body. 

Police told reported that Kurbonov was visiting a friend at an apartment complex when he was hit by Cassinelli at 8:00 PM this past Saturday.  The accident occurred in front of a CVS on U.S 42. 

A few hours after the hit and run, police arrested Cassinelli at his residence.  His arraignment took place this morning and he was officially charged with hit and run.  District Attorneys say that Cassinelli may be facing additional charges pending the results of their investigation.

A judge set Cassinelli's bail amount at $50,000 and he was ordered to wear an electric monitoring device.   At this time, police are trying to determine if Cassinelli was under the influence of alcohol when he struck Kurbonov as he has 5 prior DUI convictions.

In Firebaugh, California, authorities pressed criminal charges against a father, 34 year old Aref Kareem Mohamed, whose children died in a car accident this past Tuesday.

According to police, Mohamed was charged with three counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, three counts of child endangerment, one count of driving under the influence causing bodily injury and one count of being under the influence of a controlled substance.  At this time, police are waiting on results from Mohamed's blood test to determine which controlled substance he was under the influence of while driving.

Authorities report that while Mohamed was driving a van, he was involved in a head-on collision with another automobile.  At the time of the collision, Mohamed's three children, two sons and one daughter, were riding as passengers in the van.  It was later reported that they died during the DUI accident.

Mohamed was being held at the Madera County Jail, but was later released after posting $100,000 in bail.

Coachella DUI Checkpoint Leads to Many Arrests

This past Friday, police conducted a DUI checkpoint that led to a dozen arrests.  During the checkpoint, police screened more than 850 vehicles.

Police screened cars from 7PM until 2AM to curb DUI accidents.  The checkpoint took place at Grapefruit Boulevard and Ed Mitchell.

According to reports, over 900 vehicles drove through the checkpoint.  Police managed to stop and screen 853 drivers. 

Eight drivers were placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence and one was arrested for a prior DUI warrant.  Three individuals were also arrested on theft warrants.
Police issued 18 citations to drivers for other violations, such as driving on a suspended license and driving without a valid license.  They report that 13 vehicles were towed.

Man Pleads No Contest in DUI Hit and Run Case

In Santa Barbara, California, a man by the name of Gregory Albert Doan pled no contest to charges of vehicular manslaughter.  In 2008, Doan allegedly hit a 66 year old jobber while driving under the influence (DUI).  Instead of stopping to check on the victim, Doan sped off.

Doan also plead no contest this past Thursday to 19 counts of assault with a deadly weapon against other individuals who had been running alongside the victim.

According to police, Doan had entered the bicycle lane in August of 2008.  While swerving, he hit the victim, Carolyn Samuels.  She was running with 35 other joggers, known as Team in Training, who were representing the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  After being rushed to the hospital, Samuels died a few hours after the collision.

At this time, prosecutors are saying that Doan is facing more than 35 years in prison.  The date of his sentencing is yet to be determined.

Driver Found Guilty of DUI Manslaughter in Florida

This week, a Florida jury in Escambia County found 41 year old Donald Buffkin guilty of DUI manslaughter.  Two years ago, Buffkin's wife died while riding as a passenger in her husband's car.  Buffkin was impaired at the time of the accident.

The accident occurred on April 10th and led to Buffkin being charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving with a suspended license.  Buffkin's wife, Gari Ann, had been married to her husband four years when she died while riding in his car.

According to police reports, the 41 year old had been driving on Mobile Highway when he lost control of his vehicle, ejecting his wife from the car.  Gari Ann never made it to the hospital because she died at the scene of the accident after suffering serious injuries.  When police arrived at the scene, they administered a breath test, which revealed that Buffkin's BAC (blood alcohol concentration) was .115%.

Buffkin will be sentenced on March 5, 2010.  He faces up to 15 years imprisonment for his wife's death.  Prosecutors say that he may be subjected to enhanced sentencing because he violated his probation for another criminal offense by driving under the influence (DUI).

Florida Sheriff's Deputy Charged with DUI

Dunedin, Florida -- local news sources are reporting that a Sheriff's Deputy from Pinellas county was recently charged with driving under the influence (DUI) after causing a collision.

Reports filed with the sheriff's office state that Wade Nordby, who is 41 years of age, happened to be off duty when the incident occurred on Tuesday.  During the morning hours, Nordby crashed his motor vehicle into a concrete barrier, which led to his vehicle rolling over.  A passenger that had been riding with Nordby sustained minor injuries during the accident.

When police arrived at the scene of the collision, they noticed that Nordgy was staggering and that he reeked of alcohol.  They asked Nordby to take a breath alcohol test and his BAC was .166%, more than twice the state's legal limit of 0.08%.

After he failed the breath test, Nordby was arrested by officers for DUI and later released on $250 bail.  The sheriff's office told reporters that it has plans to conduct an internal investigation in the near future.

Oilers Goaltender Facing DUI Charges

In Scottsdale, Arizona, it is reported that Nikolai Khabibulin of the Edmonton Oilers is facing charges for driving under the influence (DUI).  The goaltender is also facing charges for speeding.

According to authorities in Scottsdale, Khabibulin was driving a Ferrari when he was pulled over by police for driving 70 mph in a 45 mph zone.  When police stopped Khabibulin, they said that they smelled alcohol on the hockey player.  He was arrested after he failed field sobriety tests.  Later, he was booked into jail on charges of DUI and speeding. 

Reporters have tried to contact Khabibulin's agent, Jay Grossman, but he has not returned any calls.

As a 7-2-9 record holder, Khabibulin signed a four year contract with the Oilers that is worth $15 million.  The contract was signed last summer.  He is a four-time NHL All-Star and he also helped the Lightning win the Stanley Cup back in 2004.

If Khabibulin is found guilty, he may be sentenced with fines, probation and DUI School.

In Orlando, Florida, a woman by the name of Denise Rutledge appeared at a local jail in Flagler Beach and requested a conjugal visit.  Instead of allowing the visit, police arrested the 45 year old for DUI (driving under the influence).

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Rutledge had made a visitation appointment with an inmate at the jail.  However, the jail does not allow conjugal visits.  Additionally, Rutledge showed up past her appointment time, so she was turned down by the jail's staff.

Once turned down, Rutledge drove away from the jail only to reappear a second time to gain admittance.  The second time she appeared, officers arrested her after she failed field sobriety tests and provided a blood alcohol sample.  Her result was .256%.  The state's legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08%.

After her arrest, Rutledge posted $500 bail and was released from police custody.
